gestão de custos

Publicado em

Today we are experiencing a very large crisis throughout the Brazilian hospital system, in which many organizations end up not being sustainable from an economic-financial point of view, generating more costs than revenues, making the enterprise unsustainable due to the lack of cost management.

Therefore, it is very important to increasingly take a clinical look at the hospital’s operating costs to ensure a healthy structure.

To be able to do this, it is very important that we keep in mind what the needs are in terms of management and what this can provide. Watch the video where I talk more about the importance of managing costs in hospital businesses.

Important aspects in terms of management

When we are looking at a hospital structure, we can look at two aspects.

The first of these is the fixed structure, the cost that must be borne every month. It normally involves labor, costs to maintain the structure and financial and accounting expenses.

But we also have to look at what may vary depending on demand. This includes the exams and procedures carried out and is called variable costs, and may include medications, necessary supplies and the use of the hospital structure to carry out consultations or exams.

When we look at this, it is possible to have information about what costs are generated. In this case we can make 2 types of decisions.

The first of these is associated with pricing, where it is possible to understand the amount that needs to be received to be able to maintain the structure and have a positive operational result.

Depending on the public being served, such as SUS, health insurance or private, prices can be set. In this case, adapt the structure to these prices.

In this way, the second decision-making process is supported, which is to understand where the cost reduction of the hospital structure will occur.

This is fundamental, as a very complex, robust and heavy structure is often offered for a demand that does not require all of this. From there, there is the opportunity to reduce and optimize costs according to the audience and the volume of revenue earned from the services offered.

When we talk about reducing costs, we are talking about reducing waste in the structure. Waste can be at an operational level or even at a strategic level, allowing the number of people, the quality of the structure and services to be optimized to guarantee the highest possible occupancy, optimizing costs.

The third point is the calculation of the need for working capital to be able to meet the deadline to cover that period between offering the service and actually receiving it, whether from private clients or health plans.
